City Releases New Sample Data From Former Landfill

July 2, 2010

Greenwood, SC - The City of Greenwood has received final results from additional soil sample testing of the former landfill located off of Valley Brook Road. The full report is available for public viewing on the City’s website main page at www.cityofgreenwoodsc.com.   (DOWNLOAD FULL REPORT - PDF)

The purpose of the additional sampling was to help develop the work plan that is a part of the Responsible Party Voluntary Cleanup Contract (VCC). The contract between the City of Greenwood and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) will outline the tasks the City will perform.   The City anticipates entering into a VCC in the coming month.

The City engaged the services of Davis and Floyd, Inc. to complete the additional soil sampling. Davis and Floyd Inc., who operates a SCDHEC certified laboratory in Greenwood, obtained the samples on May 12. Eighteen (18) soil samples were collected at various depths (6 inches, 18 inches, and 30 inches) at nine (9) different locations. The soil samples were taken downhill from an abandoned above ground storage tank located on the property.  The samples were taken in this area to find whether the soil was contaminated from the tank. The samples were only tested for lead and benzo(a)pyrene.

Based on the analysis of the data, it is unlikely a release came from the tank. The samples indicate the likelihood that limbs, branches, and other debris may have been burned on the property. The presence of burning is consistent with comments made by the public at a meeting held on April 12. Additional sampling will take place as a part of the VCC.

After the VCC is finalized by the City and SCDHEC, additional public participation will occur to include a public meeting. After the public meeting, the VCC work plan can be implemented. Future reports will be made available to the public as the project progresses.
